This retreat will take a different form than our normal weekends with only partial silence. We will be sitting in meditation, drawing, walking, reflecting, exploring ourselves and the space that we create.
The retreat will be led by Jos Hadfield. She learned from Terayama Tanchū Sensei, both in the UK and in Japan. She has been practising Zen Brushwork for more than ten years, and enjoys every opportunity to continue learning, and sharing, this meditative art form, which she likens to re-presenting the relationship between the mind, body and universe.

Jos also teaches tai-chi.

Drawing with a brush in the Zen tradition of calligraphy.
Using a beautiful large brush, black ink and white paper we make simple marks using the whole body/mind.

In order to help us come to a state of spacious ease when we pick up the brush, we prepare ourselves by quietening the mind and opening the heart in meditation and opening the body with energy raising exercises.

The kanji that we draw are Zen concepts that open us up to question – to feel how it is – rather than to take them at face value or as a literal translation. We are feeling for the essence of that which is being drawn. It is an opportunity to explore a Zen koan and to find our own individual response, and articulation of it. We draw a line – a set of contiguous marks – that aim for absolute truthfulness in the moment.

Before we pick up the brush we take time to be still, and then open up the body with simple exercises that raise our energy (ki) levels. While we are opening and moving the body we are exploring the connection between mind, heart and spirit.

We draw as a collective group, feeling the support of one another. And we have opportunity to share our experience with each other and to appreciate what we have all expressed.

It is not about making a perfect copy but to find our own truthfulness within the marks we make.

‘To draw lines of unfettered simplicity, to reveal nothing special, with no particular beauty, only an uncommon ease that transcends our understanding of space and time.’
~ Hakuin (1688 – 1768)
